The concept
This is not a framework of despair and it is not a political manifesto. It is a map. A way of finally naming what is happening to the human condition — so we can talk about it honestly, and then go enjoy our lives anyway.
The Train
Nobody voted on its destination. Nobody asked us where we wanted to go. The window for governing this acceleration is closing rapidly.
The Caboose
The billionaire and the struggling family are both in the caboose. Neither controls the engine. The illusion of control is what the system sells.
The View
The communities. The ecological stability. The meaningful labor. The human connections. The wonder. Not as future risk — as present reality.
The Question
Not just where is the train going — but what was already being destroyed by the journey itself? And can we laugh while we figure out what to do?
Intellectual Lineage
In Plato's most enduring thought experiment, prisoners are chained in a cave from birth, able only to see the shadows cast on the wall before them. They have never seen the objects casting the shadows. They have never seen the sun. The shadows are all they know — and so the shadows become reality.
When one prisoner is freed and dragged into the light, the truth is so overwhelming it is physically painful. And when he returns to tell the others what he saw, they do not believe him. They prefer the shadows they know.
The shadows on the cave wall are the metrics the current economic system uses to tell us how we are doing. GDP. Stock prices. Quarterly earnings. Productivity figures. Engagement metrics. These numbers are real — but they are not reality.
The actual objects casting the shadows — community, ecological health, meaningful labor, human connection, wonder, joy — are what we watch disappearing out the back window of the caboose as the train accelerates.
The people in the caboose are not stupid and they are not weak. They are simply positioned in a way that makes the shadows look like the whole story. That is not their fault. That is the design of the cave.
Where Caboose Capitalism departs from Plato
Plato's allegory ends with the philosopher-king — the freed prisoner who returns to govern the cave because he has seen the truth. That is not what Caboose Capitalism proposes.
There is no philosopher-king here. No one person who has seen the sun and must lead the rest. There is only the caboose — where all of us are riding together, watching the same landscape disappear behind us — and the possibility that naming what we see clearly enough might be the beginning of something different. Not a revolution led from above. A recognition shared among equals.

We all grew up with people that told us that the years would go fast and the days would go slow. Everybody always said that time went too quickly and to enjoy every moment — and usually we didn't.
So many of us fell into addiction and oppression and poverty, and then just demoralization from the capitalist society that we inherited. No one did anything wrong — but somehow we all turned against each other. Just like they did in Rome. We do not want that to happen here.
Everybody always said we have to learn through our history and look back at it — but nobody would.
Well today that is going to change.
This is the revolution that we have been talking about. No one has to die before it is time. All we need to do is pay attention to where the train is going — see how we can successfully stop the train in its tracks and enjoy our lives just as we were all promised.

In my professional life I am a licensed home inspector in the Seattle area — owner and operator of Taurus Home Inspections and Northwest Rental Inspections. I built Caboose Capitalism in the margins of a working life — before inspections, after inspections, on weekends, and during the long hours when the framework would not stop growing. The people I inspect homes for are the same people I built this for.

The Apothecary is the Caboose Capitalism health and healing resource center.
No medical advice. No advertising. Just knowledge that has always belonged to the community.

For most of human history the apothecary was a woman. She kept the community's health knowledge in her hands and in her memory. She knew which plant stopped a fever, which root eased labor, which tea calmed a grieving child. She knew her patients by name, by family, by season. She was the original healthcare system and it worked because it was rooted in relationship.
The industrial healthcare system replaced that. The Apothecary does not replace the industrial system — it remembers what came before it and asks what was worth keeping.

Some were wandering around, looking at their phones and almost walking into the street. Some were listening to earbuds and headphones, looking at the ground, smoking cigarettes.
There were others begging at the gas station. One wanted me to help him pay for a pack of cigarettes. Another wanted to buy a cigarette from him.
Then I went to the print shop, where a lovely woman in her sixties said she was very sad about getting old and did not enjoy her life as she thought she would by then.
There was another woman — very lovely — running a childcare center out of her home that she was renting. She was terrified to talk to her landlord about what was going wrong in the house. It turned out there were serious electrical issues. But she was so anxious about speaking up, afraid he might kick her out or raise the rent.
The only solution I could see to all of these unhappy, anxious, miserable people —

On August 19, 2026, Ellei Lotus sat down and built Caboose Capitalism from the ground up — in a single conversation, in real time, out loud.
The framework was named. The Joy Mandate found its language. Two hundred and seventy contacts were assembled one by one — and every decision about who made the list and who didn't was made transparently, with reasoning, on the record.

♺ The Reclamation
The Reclamation is the Caboose Capitalism waste reform division.
A separate entity. A distinct mission. The same values.
The current garbage and recycling model is not a waste management system. It is a guilt management system. It asks individuals to sort their trash carefully while corporations produce hundreds of millions of tons of packaging designed to be thrown away. It ships recyclables to other countries where they are dumped. It builds landfills in low-income communities. It treats the earth as a receiving vessel for everything the economy cannot find a use for.
The Reclamation proposes a different premise: that waste is a design failure, not a disposal problem. That everything discarded is a resource that has not yet found its next use. That the circular economy — where nothing leaves the system as poison and everything returns as nourishment — is not a utopian fantasy but the economic model that nature has run successfully for four billion years.
The Reclamation does not manage waste. It eliminates the conditions that create it.
The Reclamation Framework — Seven Pillars
Refuse First
The most powerful waste reduction step is not recycling — it is not creating waste in the first place. The Reclamation framework begins with refusal: refusing single-use packaging, refusing products designed for obsolescence, refusing systems that externalize their waste costs onto communities and ecosystems. Producer responsibility legislation — making manufacturers accountable for the full lifecycle of what they produce — is the legislative foundation of The Reclamation.
Repair and Reuse Infrastructure
The economy of repair — cobblers, tailors, appliance repair shops, furniture restoration — was systematically dismantled because it competed with the economy of replacement. The Reclamation proposes a network of community repair hubs: publicly accessible spaces with tools, expertise, and materials for repairing what would otherwise be discarded. The right to repair, enshrined in law. Appliances designed to be fixed, not replaced. The mend as the default, not the exception.
Community Composting — The Return to Earth
Forty percent of what fills landfills is organic material that could be composted. The Reclamation proposes neighborhood-scale composting infrastructure — accessible, convenient, and connected to community gardens and urban agriculture. Every apartment building. Every block. Every school. The food that fed us returns to the soil that feeds us. The original circular economy restored to the neighborhood level. Composting is not a lifestyle choice. It is basic ecological literacy.
Honest Recycling — No More Wish-Cycling
The current recycling system is largely a fiction maintained to make consumers feel better while corporations continue producing unrecyclable materials. Wish-cycling — putting things in the recycling bin and hoping — contaminates entire loads. The Reclamation proposes radical transparency: clear labeling of what is and is not actually recyclable in each municipality, standardized national recycling categories, and the elimination of materials that cannot be recycled before they are manufactured. If it cannot be reclaimed it cannot be made.
Community Material Exchanges
What one neighbor discards, another neighbor needs. The Reclamation proposes a network of community material exchanges — physical spaces and digital platforms where building materials, furniture, clothing, appliances, and goods find new homes instead of landfills. Not charity shops. Not thrift stores. Community infrastructure. Funded publicly. Accessible to everyone. The original economy of neighbors before the economy of strangers replaced it.
Zero Waste Industry Standards
Every industry generates waste specific to its operations. The Reclamation builds on the Caboose Capitalism Waste Reduction Framework — already developed for hotels, restaurants, healthcare, aeronautics, and nuclear facilities — to establish zero waste standards for every major industry. These are not voluntary sustainability pledges. They are operational standards with real accountability. What gets measured gets managed. What gets managed gets reduced.
Environmental Justice — Landfills Where They Should Not Be
Landfills, incinerators, and waste processing facilities are built in low-income communities and communities of color at rates that are not accidental. They are the physical expression of who the system believes matters. The Reclamation demands environmental justice as a prerequisite — not an afterthought — of any waste reform proposal. No new waste infrastructure sited without full community consent. Existing facilities in overburdened communities phased out with investment in the communities harmed. The people closest to the waste are the people who deserve the most input into what replaces it.

What you can do from the caboose right now
① Refuse one thing
Pick one single-use item you use regularly and eliminate it this week. One reusable bag. One refillable bottle. One bar of soap instead of a plastic bottle. Start there.
② Repair one thing
Find one thing in your home that is broken and get it fixed instead of replaced. A shoe. A lamp. A piece of clothing. Repair is a radical act.
③ Compost something
Find your nearest composting program. In Seattle and King County: search King County composting. In Tukwila: contact Tukwila Public Works. Everywhere else: search your city plus composting program.
④ Pass one thing on
Before discarding anything usable, ask: does a neighbor need this? Post to your local Buy Nothing group, leave it on your porch with a free sign, or donate to a community organization.

A choreographed public performance

Every day the city of Tukwila sends its fleet into the streets. Garbage trucks lift and lower their arms in the grey morning. Street sweepers trace invisible patterns on asphalt. Fire engines stand at the ready, all muscle and chrome. Police cars arc through intersections. School buses carry the city's most precious cargo in routes that have been memorized and forgotten a thousand times.
Nobody has ever asked what it would look like if they danced.
The Dumpster Ballet asks that question — and then answers it in a public square, with a live score, with the drivers who have been performing this choreography unacknowledged for years finally taking the bow they have always deserved.

What makes this art
The Dumpster Ballet does not pretend these vehicles are something other than what they are. It takes them exactly as they are — enormous, utilitarian, unglamorous — and asks what happens when you look at them with the full attention we give to dancers and musicians and painters. The answer is: you see beauty that was always there. You see the people behind the wheels. You see the city keeping itself alive.
What it costs
Almost nothing. The vehicles already exist. The drivers already work for the city. The routes are already memorized. What is needed: a choreographer, a composer for the live score, sound equipment, one closed street or public square, city permits, and the willingness of the City of Tukwila to say yes to something magnificent. The Caboose Capitalism Public Art Foundation handles everything else.
The most important moment
At the end of the Dumpster Ballet, the drivers step out of their vehicles and take a bow.
The garbage collector. The street sweeper. The firefighter. The bus driver. The school bus driver. The public works crew. Standing in front of their vehicles, in front of the city they have been keeping alive, in front of the community that has been driving past them for years without stopping to say thank you.
And the city of Tukwila stands up and gives them a standing ovation.
